Reusable Tote Bags
29—October 2017
Annabelle from the Wellington store has whipped up a couple of reusable tote bags to gift this Christmas!
We decided to turn them into a DIY so you can make them too! These bags are a great alternative to single-use plastic bags and come in handy for all sorts of things like a trip to the supermarket, carrying your gym gear or just for an everyday handbag.
To make a reusable tote bag you will need 0.6m of a strong woven fabric like linen, denim or cotton. You could even make one up in some of our Liberty Amalfi Swim fabric for a tote-elly cute and quick drying beach bag!
We have put together printable guidelines so you can give this project a go at home. Click here for the link: Download Reusable Tote Bag Guidelines
To make your tote super strong, we suggest serging the side seams. Alternatively, you can also add another 1cm to the seam allowance on the sides and sew french seams. Want to add a little something extra to your tote bag? Here are a couple of DIY customisation ideas from The Fabric Store HQ team:
- Stitch on a patch pocket in contrasting fabric.
- Try your hand at some embroidery.
- Add a ruffle or frill to the side seams.
- Paint your tote with a custom print or design.
These reusable bags are tote-elly trending and not just because they help us use less plastic but because they are super simple to make and are a great stash buster! This is a great project for sewists of all levels so if you give it a try don’t forget to share it with us on Instagram @wearethefabricstore using #thefabricstore.
